About Promise House / Jonathan’s Place

Promise House has embraced homeless, runaway and at-risk youth, giving them needed support, encouragement and hope to live a better life since 1984. 

The Promise House mission began as a house-turned-emergency-shelter with 16 beds located 15 minutes away from downtown Dallas. The initiative came after the church conducted a survey that revealed an alarming rate of homeless and runaway youth. As they grew and evolved, they expanded their programming to include crisis intervention, transitional housing, pregnant and parenting teen services, counseling, education, and outreach to neglected, abused, and at-risk youth ages 0-24. Furthermore, Promise House always had an open door—24 hours a day, 365 days a year—to children, youth and families in crisis, serving over 70,000 youth and families in North Texas.

In November 2023, the non-profit organization Jonathan’s Place acquired Promise House, taking over their Garland and South Dallas campuses, as well as the Oak Cliff based Wesley Inn Maternity Program.

Powering Promise: Reducing Energy Costs to Expand

In 2015, Onyx Power & Gas was engaged by Promise House to streamline energy procurement for 23 meters. In order to secure the most convenient energy supplier, the team at Onyx implemented their structured bidding process, which involved:

• A power audit
• Market analysis
• A customized RFP
• Market clearing—collection and evaluation of energy bids to select which the most cost-effective way to meet the demands and maintain grid stability is.
• Price determination
• Settlement and delivery

As a result of the process, Promise House reduced overall energy costs by 13%, allowing them to allocate that percentage to their programs.

In June that same year, the organization commissioned Onyx to perform a comprehensive energy efficiency lighting audit. The assessment included reviewing historical and current utility data and benchmarking energy use against similar facilities, on-location review of the physical structure and equipment, and a list of recommended energy efficiency measures. 

In November 2019, Promise House once again entrusted Onyx Power & Gas Consulting, this time for market intelligence and energy procurement services. By combining Onyx’s thorough strategic analysis and proven procurement solutions, Promise House secured an energy contract designed to provide long-term stability and financial predictability.
